Projektbeskrivelse
- Projektresumé

TourNord’s goal is improving tourism education in the Nordics, inspired by the key recommendations of the Nordic Council of Ministers’ 2019 tourism policy analysis for the industry:

  • Increase Nordic cooperation on sustainable development in tourism
  • Digitalize to ‘Smart’ Nordic Destinations
  • Encourage innovation to foster competitiveness and growth.

With tourism playing a growing role in the Nordics, educators/students must gear themselves towards a new future in Nordic Tourism (NT). We aim to tackle these issues and apply them to higher education.

The project is co-financed by Nordplus.

- Baggrund og formål

Our objectives are:

SHORT-TERM:

  • Network meetings, serving as a forum for exchanging best practices and experiences for educational and knowledge development within NT.
  • Discover and implement innovative ways of teaching to benefit educators and students in preparing them for the current/future demands of NT.
  • Promote & advance student/staff mobility among partners for learning, innovation and R&D activities within NT.

LONG-TERM:

  • Writing handbooks & articles on key themes within NT and education.
  • Develop intensive short-term courses for partner institutions (and beyond), geared at NT.
  • Expand network with educational institutions & tourism actors to further strengthen Nordic cooperation
- Aktiviteter og handling

TourNord is a network of higher educational institutions across Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Greenland, Faroe Islands, Iceland, Lithuania, and Poland, focused on improving tourism education in the Nordics and Baltics. Our primary objective is hosting networking meetings which serve as a forum for exchanging best practices and experiences for educational and knowledge development within Nordic Tourism (NT).

Our first meeting (Esbjerg, Denmark) focused on preparing students and educators in tourism with digital skills & competences and developing sustainable destinations. Our second meeting (Turku, Finland) focused on life-long learning and how educators can continuously update skills in tourism, what makes NT unique, and tourism lessons learned from remote locations. Our third meeting (Bergen, Norway) focused on innovative and resilient tourism, and how to prepare students for sustainable tourism. Our fourth meeting (Nuuk, Greenland) focused on the prospects and challenges of Arctic tourism.  All meets had on-site field visits to learn of NT development, interests/needs of stakeholders, geographical contexts, language/cultural diversity, accessibility, urban/rural development, and how NT is adapting to a sustainability demands. We have two more upcoming meetings in 2024 in Randers, Denmark where the focus is on responsible & regenerative tourism. The second will be in Kalmar, Sweden, where the focus will be on nature-based tourism.

TourNord hosts series of guest lectures across partner institutions for +250 tourism students, with the aim of highlighting the strengths and challenges of NT. These lectures are now standard practice at our institutions.

TourNord are active in R&D, and through multiple projects produced valuable content within NT and education. We have published articles in leading journals in their field and produced content at a tourism-practitioner level. Recently, some of our work was presented at the Nordic Symposium on Tourism and Hospitality Research. We will also be launching a book on Nordic Coastal Tourism in 2024 with research and cases from every Nordic country.  Dissemination exposure has been more than 50,000 unique visits on our website and LinkedIn page, and our activities have been covered by regional/national media.

Our research has been implemented in several of our institutions and yielded great results to the benefit of students & educators, with focus on breaking down barriers between practice and classrooms.

- Resultaternes værdi

TourNord’s impact on our institutions has been extremely positive. Network meetings were critical in exchanging best practices, learn about Nordic Tourism from other cultures/countries/institutions, and to foster closer cooperation.

We have deepened our ties, reflected in our successful continuation of guest lectures, of particular benefit to our students. Moreover, supporting each other’s PhD students, conducting Erasmus+ staff exchange, and expanding our network, is a testament to our solid foundation. TourNord is now represented by 11 partners in 9 countries

TourNord made it possible to collaborate on numerous successful R&D projects, as well as to further pursue new projects/funding. We would like to highlight the project about Nordic Coastal Tourism. This was the brainchild of TourNord and would not have happened without the network meetings. This book will be of great value to Nordic higher education institution (and beyond) teaching tourism/hospitality. The editors have taken great care in selecting authors from across the Nordics to ensure the diversity of nature, opportunities and issues of our countries are present.

Dissemination activities have been extensive, within and outside academia, ensuring our impact goes beyond our own institutions.
